What it is
Acetyl L-Carnitine, or ALCAR, is a form of L-carnitine with an acetyl group attached. This structural difference helps it cross the blood-brain barrier more readily than standard L-carnitine, which is why it is often discussed in relation to brain and nervous system function.
ALCAR occurs naturally in the body and is found in small amounts in animal-based foods such as meat, fish and poultry. Supplement forms are typically used when targeted support for energy metabolism, cognitive function or nerve health is being considered.
