Why do we get sick more often during the winter?

Why do we get sick more often during the winter?

It is understood that it is easier to get sick during the winter season. But why do we get weaker when it’s cold?

It is important to remember which defence systems are present in our respiratory tract to answer this question. The main of these is mucus which, unlike what we think, is actually one of our body’s best weapons to defend us from external threats.

In particular, mucus is produced by specific cells lining the nose, trachea, and bronchial tubes. The thin and sticky layer covering the respiratory tract is naturally used to trap foreign substances that continuously enter our body through the nose or mouth.

In addition to muciparous cells, there are particular cells with cilia in the respiratory tract, vibrating projections similar to hairs, which oscillate to “sweep away” the particles captured by the mucus and carry them outwards.

This simple but effective cleaning system allows us to protect ourselves very effectively.

Unfortunately, however, several factors increase the likelihood of getting sick in the winter. First of all, winter diseases’ origin is typically viral because viruses resist cold very well, much more so than heat.

But above all, when it is cold, we spend much more time in closed places which, being often crowded, facilitate the spread of the virus.

Furthermore, entering and exiting an enclosed place, often artificially heated and therefore hot and dry, subjects our body to sudden changes in temperature.

Unfortunately, these aspects cause a lowering of the immune defences, and the mucus in such dry environments dries up, compromising its effectiveness as a barrier.

Here, then, are the leading causes of why people get sick more often during winter.

Unfortunately, once you get sick, whether it’s a simple strep throat or something more, it’s widespread to go to the pharmacy to find a remedy for winter infections. Thanks to their known and certified effectiveness within the wide range of products offered to combat these disorders, we often see a couple of substances. These are Propolis and Colloidal Silver.

But let’s see in detail why they are so effective.

Propolis: benefits and uses of the natural antibiotic par excellence

Why do we get sick more often during the winter?

Propolis is a resinous substance that bees produce from various substances collected from plants. It is therefore of purely vegetable origin, even if it is the bees who, after harvest, process it with the addition of wax, pollen and enzymes.

Because of the winter season, it is produced as a building material to defend, seal, and protect the hives.

Bee Propolis is traditionally used to treat common colds and can help the immune system by promoting phagocytic activity and regulating the inflammatory one.

In its set of active ingredients, in addition to resins and balms (50%) and waxes (30%), 10% of volatile substances (primarily essential oils), and 10% of organic materials (for example, flavonoids), pollen, minerals, and vitamins.

The component of balsamic resins facilitates and strengthens the barrier work of the oropharyngeal mucosa, which, by regulating the production of mucus, manages to trap foreign bodies and expel them without risk.

Furthermore, flavonoids (in particular Galangina and Pinocembrin) play a significant role because they ensure most of the antimicrobial properties of Propolis.

Propolis is one of the best natural antibacterial, bringing out the bacteriostatic and bactericidal activity and working as a natural antibiotic: it prevents the multiplication of germs by killing them and stimulates the immune system.

It also has a good action on many virus strains, including influenza viruses: in particular, it inhibits their growth and slows down their multiplication. Its primary use is against sore throats, diseases of the respiratory tract (pharyngitis, tracheitis, and tonsillitis), and diseases of the oral cavity (gingivitis, inflammation of the tongue, palate).

The presence of minerals and vitamins also contributes to the support of the immune system. In addition, the complexity of the substances present in Propolis makes it a reliable and safe ally for many of the ailments that affect the respiratory tract, especially if of infectious origin.

Traditionally it is extracted from the hive and stored in an alcoholic solution; sometimes, it is taken raw. Since then, to make its intake easier, alcohol-free variants have been produced in candies with honey and in practical nebulizers in products such as throat sprays.

Natural Solution Throat Spray

The main activities carried out by Propolis occurs in the respiratory tract, which is why most of the products based on this substance are offered in spray form for external or local use. However, there are products to ingest for internal use, but they are not used.

Those who habitually take Propolis know different forms, from mother tincture to raw Propolis to chew. Being practically free of side effects, it can be taken several times a day during the acute phase of symptoms.

Each form has characteristics that differ mainly in “pure” or easier to take products. The throat spray represents the right compromise, as it is convenient and ideal for allowing the Propolis to settle effectively in the throat.

 The spray is the most amicable solution, and many of these products are registered as medical devices, that is, tax-deductible. In addition, some variants do not contain alcohol, which children can also take without problems.

When to use it?

In summary, a Propolis-based throat spray is indicated in cases of:

  • cough and cold;
  • bacterial and viral pathologies of the upper airways;
  • pain or discomfort when swallowing;
  • hoarseness;
  • pharyngitis;
  • laryngitis.
