Have you ever heard of iron tablets containing free iron particles?

A customer contacted me and was concerned about an iron tablet attracted to a magnet.

Have you ever heard of iron tablets containing free iron particles?

Iron supplements are salts that contain iron atoms in a compound of non-metallic ions such as sulphate, which has sulphur, oxygen and water molecules. Each iron atom in that supplement is still a tiny magnet, but the iron atoms are too far from each other to build ferromagnetic domains, like pure iron, which would stick to a magnet.

The iron in our body, which is the substance in the supplements, is the same iron that forms the metal iron that attracts magnets, is used to build things, etc. So any potent supplement of it is going to attract magnets.

There is only one type of iron, the same with copper, selenium and other metal elements. Just because small amounts of them are present in the human body doesn't mean their properties have changed; the only difference is how they are used.

Iron-containing blood doesn’t respond very much, even to a powerful magnet. Also, blood circulates the body, moving swiftly in the blood vessels, so the effect of the magnet is reduced even more! So don’t worry, you won't get attached to your fridge. lol

What is iron?

Iron is a nutrient that plays many critical roles in our body, including keeping us healthy and full of vitality.

Have you ever heard of iron tablets containing free iron particles?

Low iron levels are common, and they can cause unpleasant symptoms like tiredness, poor concentration, and frequent bouts of illness. However, iron deficiency is not always easy to spot, especially in its early stages.

Many drugs can only be absorbed in particular parts of the intestine. Scientists describe this system that can safely hold a magnetic gelatin capsule anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract.

Iron supplements are a great way to reverse a deficiency, especially if diet changes alone are unsuccessful.

iron deficiency

Low iron levels are common, especially in certain subsets of the population. If left untreated, they may develop into a more serious condition known as iron deficiency anemia (IDA)

Have you ever heard of iron tablets containing free iron particles?

IDA is a condition in which your blood doesn’t contain healthy enough, oxygen-carrying red blood cells. As a result, you may experience the following symptoms

  • tiredness
  • pale skin
  • headaches
  • itchiness
  • hair loss
  • heart palpitations
  • a lack of energy
  • shortness of breath
  • spoon-shaped nails
  • difficulty concentrating
  • more frequent bouts of illness
  • changes in the way food tastes
  • a sore tongue or difficulty swallowing
  • painful open sores in the corners of the mouth
  • an uncontrollable urge to move your legs — also known as restless leg syndrome
  • difficulty regulating your body temperature or often feeling cold
  • hearing ringing, hissing, or buzzing noises inside your head
  • cravings for non-food items, such as ice or dirt — also known as pica

iron supplementation

Iron supplements can help reverse low iron levels or treat iron deficiency anemia. They can produce results quicker than diet interventions and are often considered the treatment method of choice.

These supplements can be beneficial among people who are prone to low iron levels, especially if they’re unable to maintain a good iron status through diet alone, including

  • infants and young children
  • people with heart failure
  • people with alcoholism
  • frequent blood donors
  • people with cancer
  • people experiencing heavy periods
  • those following a vegetarian or vegan diet
  • those who have undergone gastric surgery
  • people regularly partaking in heavy exercise
  • people with gastrointestinal disorders, such as celiac disease, ulcerative colitis, or Crohn’s disease
  • those taking iron-depleting medications, such as those used to reduce stomach acid
  • people with blood disorders, such as thalassemia or sickle cell anemia

It’s important to note that taking iron supplements when they’re unnecessary could harm your health, partially because they typically contain high doses of iron, which can cause digestive issues and reduce the absorption of other nutrients in your gut.

Taking these supplements unnecessarily may also cause cell damage and result in organ failure, coma, or death in severe cases. Adverse side effects can occur in anyone but appear especially fatal in children. Therefore, always speak to your healthcare professional about getting your, and your child’s iron status tested before taking iron supplements, and always follow your healthcare provider’s dosage recommendations.
